CHAPTER 6

A Picnic to Remember

In his effort to keep me from sleeping, we played every board game he had available in the house. He tried to stay awake but lost the battle a few hours before sunlight. I’ve spent the time alone, rewriting the already newly written chapters. Quin has inspired me to change the relationship between my male and female lead. What was going to be a run-of-the-mill wham-ban-thank you ma’am situation is now something different. What? I have no idea.

Climbing the stairs to the loft, I stare out the windows, admiring the beautiful sunrise. It’s a rare occasion that I’m up in time to watch a sunrise, however, this one feels different.

“Wynter?” a sleepy voice calls from below.

“Up here.”

Seconds later, he’s standing beside me. “Sunrises are even better than sunsets.”

“I’ll have to agree on this one. The colors are so vivid, it looks like a painting.”

“How’s the head?” he asks, leaning his hip into mine.

“Much better. Thank you.”

“I’m hungry. Want some breakfast?”

“Sure? My usual breakfast consists of black coffee.”

He moves toward the stairs. “No black coffee here. I was thinking more along the lines of bacon and eggs.”

I make a face. “Eggs I bought…bacon was too expensive.”

“Then how about eggs and toast?”

I smile. “Perfect.” I follow him down the stairs and into the kitchen. The sunrise has nearly disappeared, bringing the sun high in the sky. “If I owned this cottage, I’d never leave.”

“Yeah, it’s pretty amazing.”

“Why don’t you live here?”

He sets the egg carton on the bar. “After Jen died, I didn’t want to be here much.”

“I’m sorry. Just tell me to stop prying.”

He begins cracking eggs into a skillet he pulled from somewhere. “You’re not prying. It’s good to talk about her.” He scrambles the eggs while talking. “I told you I built this place.” I nod, remembering our conversation yesterday. “I built it for her. She loved this land, and this was our favorite view. I bought the land and built this cottage before we married.” He looks around. “After she died, I couldn’t be here anymore. Olivia and I spend Christmas Eve here for old time’s sake, but other than that, I don’t stay.”

“Thank you for staying with me last night. I know it must have been hard.”

Quin laughs as he empties the skillet onto two plates. “Strangely, no. It wasn’t hard at all.”

I place two slices of buttered toast on the plates and our breakfast is complete. “I’m glad you did.”

“Yeah, me too.” We move to the wooden table, sitting side by side, and eat our meager breakfast.

“So, what’s on the schedule for today?” he asks, carrying our plates to the kitchen.

“You don’t have to stay with me. I’ll be fine. Honestly, I could use some sleep. Now that we know I’m not going to die, I might try to grab a few hours before I write some more.” I look up, not sure if I should tell him about changing my story. In a moment of weakness, I tell him.

“You changed it?”

“Yeah, you fell asleep for a few hours, and I rewrote the first three chapters.
